Vocal Groups

Merel Martens started conducting her first choir in 2005: Liriko in Vlaardingen. More than 10 years later, she is conductor and coach for a number of permanent vocal groups.

In January 2011 Merel founded vocal group Pitch Control. In the Hague a group of enthusiastic singers forms a semi-professional vocal group under the guidance of Merel. They embody pure Pop and Jazz in original arrangements, mostly a capella. Pitch Control won the renowned Aarhus Vocal Festival 2013 in Denmark. Since that time, Pitch Control is often asked to perform at festivals and concerts in the Netherlands and abroad.

From the Hague to Utrecht, where Merel has been the conductor of VOÏSZ Vocal Projects, since November 2010. VOÏSZ Vocal Projects = innovation. During yearly projects, VOÏSZ searches for interdisciplinair coöperations and challanges. VOÏSZ enjoys praise and notoriety both in and outside of the Netherlands. In October 2015, VOÏSZ won the Dutch national choir competition in the category “Large Vocal Groups” under the auspices of the BALK foundation.

NEW!! MAZE is vocal music reinvented. 20 singers, male and female, create a new perception of what voices can do. Like in a MAZE, the possibilities are endless and you’ll get lost in the voices! MAZE will be born in September 2016. MAZE will have its weekly Wednesday night rehearsals at Codarts, Kruisplein 26 Rotterdam, right next to Central Station.

From September 2014, Merel and Peder started Dutch Organic Choir. A group of singers that work with rotated leadership and sing style-free a cappella music. DOC is the first existing Organic choir and is open for experiment, challange and innovation.

Merel is also the permanent vocal coach for the professional vocal group from the Netherlands: The Junction, which was founded in January of 2013. The five ambitious, talented singers combine diverse musical backgrounds with a passion for a cappella singing.

In addition to her “normal” schedule, Merel also coaches various groups in the Netherlands and abroad. Merel can also be found at many (inter)national festivals for performances, workshops and coachings.
